BCM & Floor CAN-Bus Submersion Risk
Factory automotive floor carpet is bonded with 20mm to 45mm of closed-cell and open-cell polyurethane foam.
By the time moisture is palpable to touch, the Body Control Module (BCM), yaw sensors, ground junction busbars, and seat wiring connectors are often fully submerged. Galvanic corrosion begins within 48-72 hours, resulting in uncommanded airbag deployments, dead battery drains, or complete engine immobilizer lockout.
- 1. High-Pile Towel Compression: Press dry bath towels into the footwell corners under heavy weights (e.g. gym barbell plate or toolbox) to wick water from the lower sponge.
- 2. Shop-Vac Surface Extraction: Vacuum continuously along the door threshold and lower carpet seams to reduce hydraulic head pressure.
- 3. Active Dehumidifier Deployment: Seal a 230V household compressor dehumidifier inside the closed vehicle overnight with an extension cord through a pinched window margin.
- 4. Negative Terminal Disconnect: If electrical anomalies occur (wipers cycling spontaneously, warning lights, dash clicking), safely disconnect the 12V vehicle battery negative (-) terminal to stop galvanic trace erosion.
